I got the idea from the NCSLMA conference, as well as the Star Wars Character Madness Tournament on the starwars.com site, to have students nominate their favorite book characters and then pit them against each other in a tournament.
Students vote in different brackets, for example, Greg Heffley (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) vs Captain Underpants (from the series by the same name). The winner advances to the next round to compete against the winners of other brackets.
This year's winner was Greg Heffley, who narrowly edged out the win in the final round against Katniss Everdeen of the Hunger Games series.
I have only had third through fifth graders nominate and vote this year. Next year I hope to expand the competition to the younger grades, maybe even run three smaller simultaneous tournaments: K-1, 2-3, 4-5. Students have really enjoyed this so far, have even asked me when they can vote again and have cheered on their favorite characters.
